NCC to build SEK 800 million data center for Facebook

NCC Construction Sweden announced that it has secured an order from
social media major Facebook to construct a data center in Luleå.

The contract has been signed with Pinnacle Sweden. The total order value
is approximately SEK 800 million, of which NCC’s share is worth approximately
SEK 400 million. The assignment pertains to the first of three data centers
planned for the area.

The project will be implemented in a joint venture between NCC and two
US construction companies, DPR Construction and Fortis Construction.

The data center is estimated to be 28,000 square meters when completed.
It is the first of three data centers planned for the area.

Facebook has imposed stringent
energy-classification requirements and the data center will be certified in
accordance with LEED’s gold level certification.

“The building will require considerable energy so the client has imposed
rigorous environmental-classification requirements, requesting the Gold level,
which is LEED’s second highest rating,” said Mats Eklund, department manager at
NCC Construction Sweden, Northern region.

NCC will be using Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) methods
throughout the project. Construction will commence in October and completion is
scheduled for December 2012. The project will engage approximately 300
employees. Advanced installation tasks will account for a big part of the work.
