Emulex leads 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter market to cloud users

By Telecom Lead Team: 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and
adapter shipments posted 3 percent sequential growth during Q4 2011, to about
1.3 million ports.

The Ethernet controller and adapter shipments are forecast
to surge in Q1 2012, propelled by the launch of Intel’s next server platform,
named Romley.

While shipments to traditional server manufacturers
declined, 10 Gbps Ethernet ports going onto servers built by Cloud customers
continued to blossom during the quarter.

“Mellanox more than doubled its adapter shipments,
driven mainly by one large Cloud customer. Meanwhile, Intel enjoyed a blow out
growth in its LOM shipments to the stand-alone servers of its Cloud
customers,” said Sameh Boujelbene, analyst covering Controllers and
Adapters at Dell’Oro Group.

The Controller and Adapter report shows share shifts
among Broadcom, Cisco, Emulex, Intel, Mellanox and QLogic. The report also
tracks 10 Gbps migration onto stand-alone vs. blade servers and gives details about
Fibre Channel over Ethernet enabled ports as well as 10G Base-T shipments.
