LG Uplus selects Boingo for Wi-Fi roaming and data offloading

Boingo
Wireless, a Wi-Fi software and services provider, announced that South Korean
mobile phone operator LG Uplus has selected Boingo to provide global Wi-Fi
roaming and cellular data offload services for its customers under the LG U+
brand.

As
part of the three-year platform services agreement, LG U+ will license Boingo’s
authentication software development kit for Android platforms.

International
data roaming is very expensive, and this gives us a cost-effective data
solution for our customers when they travel abroad. Boingo’s approach allows us
to fully control the branded experience for our customers while extending their
Wi-Fi access around the globe,” said Yi Seungil, vice president of Marketing
Strategy Division for LG U+.

The
company has also agreed to wholesale roaming terms that allow LG U+ customers
to access more than 400,000 Boingo-enabled hotspots around the world. LG U+
will integrate the SDK into its Android smartphones to create a seamless login experience
for users.

Boingo
has signed a separate network access agreement with LG U+ that gives Boingo’s
retail and wholesale customers access to more than 40,000 LG U+ hotspots in
South Korea.

Progressive
mobile operators such as LG U+ increasingly see the value of bundling Wi-Fi
access with cellular data services in order to offload the growing data
consumption at home while providing cost-effective data solutions when away
from their home network,” said Allen Pan, director of Asia Pacific for Boingo
Wireless.

Boingo
Wireless recently announced that it has enhanced
its unlimited Wi-Fi data plans, simplifying Wi-Fi access for users with more
than one Wi-Fi enabled device.
