Samsung said it will address expansion of the domestic 5G network and seek opportunities to expand overseas, including in North America, Japan, Southwest Asia, and Europe in 2022. Samsung aims to prepare for future by improving in-house chip that is vital for 5G while also strengthening virtualization solutions for telecoms.

Samsung said the Networks Business expanded its business, including in North America and Japan, and continued to grow 5G network installations in the domestic market in Q3 2021. Samsung did not disclose its revenue or growth from network business.

Samsung said the Networks Business will continue to enhance hardware with custom 5G chips and strengthen software-based virtualization solutions for future growth as the company pursues continued expansion overseas.

Samsung said its total net profit rose 31 percent to 12.3 trillion won in Q3 2021. Samsung’s revenue grew 10 percent to a record 74 trillion won.

Samsung Electronics said on Thursday it expects component shortages to affect chip demand from some customers in the current quarter.

“A longer-than-expected component supply issue may need to be monitored due to potential impacts” on the manufacturing of devices that use memory chips, the company said in a statement, although it added there was “strong fundamental demand for servers from increased investments from technology companies.”

The world’s top maker of memory chips posted a 28 percent jump in operating profit in the July-September quarter to 15.8 trillion won ($13.48 billion) on the back of an 82 percent on-year profit surge in its chip business, where earnings rose to 10.1 trillion won ($8.62 billion).

Rising memory chip prices and shipments, plus a jump in profitability at Samsung’s chip-contract manufacturing business boosted the chip division’s operating profit, while sales of Samsung’s new foldable smartphones were tempered by marketing and component costs.

Samsung said demand for DRAM chips is expected to stay strong in the fourth quarter due to new CPU adoption and expansion of data centre investments, while personal computer manufacturing growth is expected to hold in line with the previous quarter.
