Revenue of telecom operators dips 6.8% to Rs 66,532 crore in Q3: TRAI

Average Gross revenue breakup in Q4 2016Gross Revenue (GR) of Indian telecom operators fell 6.79 percent to Rs 66,532 crore in the December quarter of 2016 from the previous quarter, said TRAI.

The decline is the result of the entry of Reliance Jio Infocomm in September 2016. Jio offered free voice and data services till March 31, 2017. Yesterday, Reliance Jio said it would stop its Summer Surprise offer shortly after getting orders from TRAI.

Indian telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone are under pressure to improve revenue. TRAI said Gross Revenue of Indian telecom operators increased 1.81 percent in December quarter of 2016 over the same quarter in 2015.

Monthly Average Revenue per User (ARPU) for GSM service declined 14.1 percent, from Rs 121 in September 2016 to Rs 104 in December 2016.

Monthly ARPU for GSM service declined 15.32 percent y-o-y. Prepaid ARPU for GSM service per month declined from Rs 103 to Rs 86, and postpaid ARPU per month also declined from Rs 485 to Rs 456.

Access services contributed 81.22 percent of the total Adjusted Gross Revenue of telecom services. In Access services, Gross Revenue (GR), Adjusted Gross Revenue(AGR), License Fee and Spectrum Usage Charges(SUC) declined by 8.09 percent, 10.55 percent, 10.92 percent and 12.29 percent respectively.

Average Revenue per User (ARPU) for access services based on AGR declined from Rs 131.10 in quarter ending September 2016 to Rs 111.63 in quarter ended December 2016, said TRAI in a report.

India has 1,127.37 million wireless subscribers including 464.78 million rural subscribers and 662.60 million urban subscribers in 2016. India’s teledensity was 88.00 with 165.04 urban Teledensity and rural Teledensity of 52.84.

India has 391.50 million Internet subscribers (+6.54 percent) including 155.41 million narrowband subscribers and 236.09 million broadband subscribers.

India has 21.51 million wired Internet subscribers.

India has 370 million wireless Internet subscribers.

India has 276.44 million urban Internet subscribers.

India has 115.06 million rural Internet subscribers.

India added 77.63 million mobile subscribers during the December quarter.

India has 1,127.37 million wireless (+7.4 percent) at the end of December 2016.
