Globe Telecom hikes Capex in line with 5G and LTE growth plan

Globe Telecom today said its Capex (capital expenditure) during the first quarter of 2019 reached around P8.8 billion — representing 24 percent of revenues.

Globe Telecom spent about 68 percent of the total expenditures for data-related services in the Philippines.

“We will step up our efforts on managing costs, growing revenues, and driving efficiencies to fuel further our digitalization efforts for our customers,” said Globe Telecom CEO Ernest Cu.

Globe Telecom has increased its Capex guidance to P63 billion in 2019. Globe Telecom aims to conduct 5G commercial pilot launch in June this year.

Globe Telecom in 2018 started delivering cloud-based intelligent omni-channel routing and interactions management to boost customer experience.

Amdocs, a provider of software and services, partnered with Amazon Web Services to enable Globe Telecom to deliver better experience across all touchpoints, including web portal, self-service and mobile applications, as well as social media and messaging platforms.

Globe Telecom built a Facebook Messenger bot called Gie of Globe to communicate with its customer base in a more personalized way. Gie of Globe is a personalization of a digital-savvy Filipina designed to know when a customer service experience needed an additional human touch.

Globe Platinum customers have exclusive access to Thea, a virtual concierge that provides assistance for day-to-day requests on reservations, bookings, events, and other services.

Globe Telecom offers smartphones from device makers such as Apple, Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo to speed up the adoption of LTE handsets.

Globe Telecom reported services revenues of P36 billion (+13 percent) in the first three months of 2019 – powered by increase in data usage.

Globe Telecom reported mobile revenues of P27 billion (+11 percent), mostly coming from the Prepaid brands. Globe Telecom generated mobile data revenues of P16.5 billion for the first three months of the year. Mobile data revenue accounts for 61 percent of service revenue vs 47 percent a year ago. Mobile data traffic grew from 180 petabytes to 370 petabytes.

Mobile voice revenue was P6.3 billion (–15 percent), while mobile SMS revenues reached P4.2 billion (–22 percent). Globe Telecom has 83.5 million mobile subscribers, achieving 13 percent growth from the fourth quarter of 2018.

Globe Telecom generated home broadband revenue of P5.2 billion (+21 percent). Globe Telecom has over 1.7 million (+22 percent) home broadband subscribers and around 63 percent are fixed wireless subscribers.

Total operating expenses (Opex) and subsidy of Globe Telecom reached P16.1 billion for the period, or 1 percent higher year- on-year.

EBITDA was P19.9 billion (+24 percent) with EBITDA margin of 55 percent in first quarter of 2019 vs 50 percent from a year ago, Globe Telecom said on Monday.
